Research indicates that there is no better base for academic success than reading. The more students read, the better able they will be to understand the concepts that teachers present. Cliffside Park High School encourages students to read newspapers, magazines, fiction, and non-fiction about various topics throughout the year on their own. Students are also assigned summer reading.

Summer reading assignments are tied to courses for all students except Special Education (SE) and English Language Learners (ELL) students. SE and ELL students will choose two books from department lists.

All other students must read the books associated with the courses they will take in 2008 -09.

Any student taking (or retaking) the following subjects have a summer reading:

·         Health 9

·         The first year of any world language…Italian 1, French 1, Spanish 1 (regular or Native),

·         Biology (not Biology Honors) or Preparation for Physical Science (PPS)

·         US History 1

·         English 11

·         Algebra 2 (Honors, A, B, or Basic levels)

·         English 12 (two books)

New students registering in the summer will select from a Guidance or Administration summer reading list.

If the local book stores do not have the books for summer reading on the shelf please
