CLIFFSIDE PARK SCHOOL DISTRICT

SCHOOL NO. 3 REPORT CARD 2007-2008

What would you observe if you spent several days visiting Cliffside Park School No. 3?  First and foremost, you would notice happy active learners who are engaged in a variety of educational experiences. Reading and writing are stressed through out our balanced literacy curriculum. Reading for meaning, with a goal to stimulate each and every student to enjoy books and become lifelong readers. Whether reading or being taught “the basics,” the students gain an appreciation of how to interact with one another in their daily lives.

Thus one would quickly notice that they are being taught more than just subject matter.  Students are encouraged to grow both academically and socially in ways that help them learn how to learn and be better citizens. At School #3, good manners matter.

It would not take you long to realize that Cliffside Park School No. 3 is a diverse, pluralistic and multicultural entity.  The diversity of the families that entrust their children to us is one of the schools greatest assets.  Although the diversity is challenging, teachers use it to establish positive learning experiences. Being a multi-cultural school, students gain an appreciation of each other and are able to learn from shared encounters. Parents are encouraged to interact with the teachers and communication between them is vital.

When you walk into our building it is quite evident that our school climate is both cheerful and positive, while all 220 students from grade one to grade six are very well behaved. Aside from our regular classroom setting various support services are available to meet the distinct needs of the children. These services include but are not limited to ESL, Title One Reading, Writing, and Math, Resource and Enrichment. A weekly offering of Special Subjects includes, Art, Computers, Physical Education, and Library, Vocal Music, and Instrumental Music. Students are encouraged to fully explore all of subjects within the curriculum.

School # 3, like all schools through-out the United States face the challenges associated with the “No Child Left Behind” mandate. Teachers’ in our school are focusing most explicitly on language arts and mathematic skills. A recent measure of success was attained by our third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in the NJ ASK Test. Our School achieved its AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) with 84% of the students receiving proficient and advanced proficient scores in Language Arts and Math. This was a solid accomplishment and we hope to improve for the 2008 NJ ASK.

Your stay at School No. 3 would find you gaining an appreciation for our hard working, motivated teaching staff.  Most of our faculty has advanced academic degrees.  Their training and education did not end with their induction into the profession.  In fact, their training extends throughout the life of their professional career through on-going and sustained professional development endeavors.  The teachers read professional publications, discuss educational issues, and attend workshops, grade level meetings, and seminars.  This is to ensure that they are at the cutting edge of educational change and understand their ever-evolving roles.

A priority again this year will be to teach our children to be good readers. Our students will be taught to think as they read and use the techniques of connecting, schema, questioning, inferring, predicting, and synthesizing to enhance the meaning. Furthermore each teacher will use a Development Reading Assessment tool to evaluate reading skills.  The districts mission goal is for each student to become an independent reader.
